Mangaluru: Senior citizens struggle for seats, safety on city buses amid crowded stops and rush hour

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (VP)

Mangaluru, Jun 30: Elderly residents are facing significant challenges due to the lack of available seats on buses in the city. The bus route running from State Bank to Panjimogaru, Kulur, Kavoor, and Surathkal includes reserved seating for the elderly and disabled, but these seats often remain inaccessible due to overcrowding by younger passengers. Negotiating the crowded buses has become a daily struggle for the elderly, who find it difficult to board amidst the rush.

The issue extends beyond the buses themselves to the bus stops. Crowded conditions at bus stops make it hard for elderly passengers to reach the buses in time. Compounding the problem, buses frequently fail to stop directly at the designated stops, requiring passengers to rush and potentially risking accidents, particularly hazardous during the rainy season.

One elderly passenger expressed frustration, stating, "City buses are typically packed during morning and evening rush hours, leaving us without seats. Now, bus stops have become places where people wait, as buses often stop either behind or ahead of the designated stop, forcing us to chase after them. This situation can lead to serious injuries, especially in bad weather. Buses do not wait for passengers who are slightly late, even for just a few minutes, which adds to the difficulty."

Another elderly individual highlighted the lack of seat reservation policy, noting, "We've relied on city buses for travel for a long time. However, as we age, it becomes increasingly challenging to rush and climb onto crowded buses. Seats are reserved for women, but there's no similar provision for senior citizens or the handicapped. This needs to change to ensure fairness."

The elderly residents emphasised that addressing these bus-related challenges requires public education. They believe younger passengers should be encouraged to offer seats to elderly and disabled individuals voluntarily, as is often seen with students. This compassionate attitude, they argue, needs to be cultivated among the younger generation to improve overall bus etiquette and accessibility.

The city administration and transport authorities are urged to consider these concerns seriously and work towards implementing solutions that prioritize the needs of elderly and disabled bus passengers, thereby fostering a more inclusive and safer public transport environment for all residents of Mangaluru.

Senior Citizen's plight in India needs special attention. In many cases, they are living alone and mobility for them comes at a premium. Many cannot even board the bus, let alone getting seats. Taxi and rickshaws are also serving from the 5-star lounge. Rather than looking it purely from a demand supply angle, a compassionate angle also needs to be imbibed into our approach wherein mobility is enabled exclusively for this class which is available on call at a reasonable rates. One cannot expect Sr. Citizens to spend like the earning class on their mobility. One way is for residential societies to crowd fund and maintain a service that enables Sr. Citizen mobility. Alternately, KSRTC might come up with mobility solution (Sr. Citizen friendly buses) that which could be financed like Shakthi scheme (but not completely free), while dropping the current freebie scheme. I do not think this will resonate well with the politicians as they would look at the numbers actually turning up to vote and it translating into vote for them.

If there is will, there is a way. But nobody can change Mangalore. First of all shieft the service bus stand to Pumpwell, then DC office, then RTO office to out skirt. Automatically 90% problems will solve. In peak hours from 7.30am to 9.30 am and evening 5pm to 7pm start separate buses for students, Special Ladies only buses, and like in Delhi all private city and service buses must run under KSRTC oporation. (Like in Delhi all city buses running under DELHI TRANSPORT CORPORATION). All problem will solve permanently.

Today I find in most of all branches of nationalised banks people assemble in large numbers to check bank accounts where in under Kata-Kat Scheme Rs.8500 is going to be deposited each and every month. Is it not we should praise much grand old party are much look towards welfare of the people. Our CM is struggling to meet PM in New Delhi..as like PM of our neighbouring country foreseen in Gulf Countries. Who cares about senior citizens under Shakti Yojana. Let them enjoy there rest of life in neighbourhood.

Not only in buses the so called senior citizens are bluntly neglected everywhere. Whats the use of just labelling them as senior citizens and neglecting them completely to give them respect and all the due facilities. The Govt has also utterly failed to provide required facilities to them

Indians need lessons in basic economics. Buses are overcrowded because of the policy of providing free bus rides to women. The demand for bus rides exceeds supply. Supply and demand will be in equilibrium when market rate is charged for the bus ride.

it is the responsibility of the bus conductor to see that Ladies should first occupy the ladies seats and not others seats. I have seen ladies occupy other seats and keep the ladies seats empty. Gents can not sit on ladies seats. They have to stand. Conductor must also see the age proof of the passenger siting on senior citizen seat. If the junior passenger (male or female) do not offer the senior citizen seat to the senior, the conductor must issue a 5 times high ticket to the junior passenger who occupy and do not offer seat to the senior citizen. The police must help the conductor to bring this dicipline. Bus conductor can improve this situation if he wish.

Pandu..Installing doors in all private buses wont work for long run. Situation is going to worse in coming days. Need to introduce a Uniform Civil Code which should be endorsed by all opposition parties without any much fuss. Population Explosion is major reason behind. Unless and until religion not kept aside society wont improve much. Otherwise a dictator needed to lead the nation with iron fist with strict rules. People even not bother to keep there city clean atleast what impact made with foreign people who travel to our country. Tourism is earn much revenue to the nation if everything set right. It's not a responsibility of one individual named Modi.

Abolish the private bus mafia and see the difference. Problem is senior citizens do not demand their seat, the conductor of the bus who have to see to the senior citizens comfort and see to it that the reserved seats are occupied by senior citizens, are least bothered. No tickets are issued by the city bus conductors.

Talking about Kulur, Padambur, Bikampady , Suratkal, Katipalla, and Krishnapura doesn’t yield any benefit. Senior citizens are not respected, and no one offers them a seat on buses. Poor souls stand there and suffer.
