Udupi: Lady delivers five babies on ambulance in unique protest over pathetic roads

Udupi, Nov 25: A pregnant lady returning to her home town in Uttara Kannada district by ambulance via George Fernandes road towards the railway station after completing her medical check-up at the Manipal hospital has given birth to five babies due to severe potholes on the road.

Udupi district police arrived at the spot. RPF police rescued the mother and the children. Her husband was seen weeping and cursing the condition of the road.

The mock incident was displayed dramatically to criticise the pathetic condition of roads in the leadership of social worker Nithyananda Volakadu by district Nagarika Samithi said that commuting on the road was a challenge. Several people travel to and from the railway station here. The road is good only for deliveries and accidents, he said.

President of Taxi drivers association Valerian D’Souza said that several requests made to the concerned officials several times in the past were futile. The edges of the potholes have become sharp and damage the tyres of vehicles, he said.

The problems faced by taxi drivers and auto rickshaw drivers here have been acute. Those who commute on the road complain of body pains, he said.
