Supreme Court cancels actor Darshan’s bail, terms high court order flawed

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 14: In a major setback for actor Darshan, the Supreme Court has cancelled the bail granted to him by the Karnataka high court, observing that the order was flawed and based on technical grounds. The two-judge bench comprising Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan stated that no accused, regardless of status, is above the law and emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law.

The court remarked that the accused had been given ‘five-star treatment’ and noted that the jail superintendent should have been suspended. Calling the verdict a ‘landmark judgment’, the bench reiterated that the law applies equally to all.

Darshan was arrested on June 11 last year and remained in jail for over four months before securing temporary release citing back pain. He was granted full bail in December, a decision the Karnataka government challenged in the Supreme Court.

During the hearings, the apex court expressed displeasure over the reasons cited by the high court for granting bail. With the bail now revoked, Darshan is likely to return to jail, a development expected to have a significant impact on his acting career.
