Spain's most successful Olympian retires

Rio de Janeiro, March 26 (IANS): Canoeist David Cal, Spain's most successful Olympian, has announced his retirement.

The 32-year-old's decision was driven by "lack of motivation and form", reports Xinhua.

Spain's Olympic committee president Alejandro Blanco praised the winner of one gold and four silver Olympics medals.

"We should protect and give thanks to David Cal, there are few like him," Blanco said on Wednesday.

Cal had reunited with his coach Jesus Morlan in December, training with Brazilian Olympic hopefuls in a bid to shed excess weight and revive his career.
