Sullia, Jun 11: Convener of 'Malenadu Janahita Rakshana Vedike', Kishore Shiradi, announced that the Vedike, in association with Sakleshpur-based 'Shiradi Ghat Ulisi Samiti', will be removing gates put up on both ends of Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 on June 15 as a measure of protest against agonizing delay in completing road works.

Addressing a press conference in Subrahmanya on Tuesday, he criticized the government for closing down the road the entire year in the name of road repair. 'The work at the highway has been limping since its inception. Even after six months, the first phase of work has not been completed. As a result of the closure of the highway, people of Dakshina Kannada and Hassan have been going through lot of problems. Education of children has been affected, and hotelliers, shopkeepers and petty vendors are facing hardships,' he explained.

He recalled that Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner had assured to open this road for traffic on May 30, but now he is taking to take shelter under the pretext of onset of monsoon. 'Our patience has withered. Therefore, the only way now left for us is to remove gates set up on both the sides, and allow vehicles to move freely on this road,' he said.

Shiradi said that at the beginning of the protest, the gate at Gundia will be removed, and the protesters will move on the Shiradi Ghat Road to reach Sakleshpur, where a huge protest would be held in association with the people of Sakleshpur taluk. He said that over 2,000 people would be participating in the protest.

The press conference was attended by Jayaprakash Koojugodu, Jayaram Kattemane, and some others.
