Udupi, Sep 11: Rashtreeya Heddari Ulisi Horata Samiti convener B Govindraj Hegde has declared that the committee, with help from the general public and organizations, will repair the stretch of the national highway from Kallianpur to Sasthan, by closing it for traffic from September 27 to October 1.
The highway here has been rendered unmotorable and full of craters and pot holes. The highway department was given time to repair this stretch but it has failed to act within the specified period. Hence, student organizations, Stree Shakti Self Help Society, vehicle owners and workers associations, various organizations, activists of political parties and the general public will work under the leadership of the committee to repair this portion of the highway, he declared.
It may be recalled that a protest had been organized near Heroor bridge on the national highway itself on August 22 this year, asking the department concerned to undertake road repairs before September 10. The protestors had informed that they would take up highway repair works, if no repairs are undertaken by then by the department.
The committee said that a meeting to discuss about possible action plans on highway repairs was convened on Septembeer 9. A token protest dharna will be held in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Friday September 12, followed by a 'face-to-face' programme with people's representatives of the district on September 18. On the twentieth of this month, students will take out a jatha. A protest dharna will also be organized in front of the office of the provincial office of the National Highway Authority in Bangalore on September 23, Hegde explained.
