M'lore: Miscreant s Damage Cricket Pitch at Nehru Maidan

The Hindu

Mangalore, Sep 13: The only proper cricket pitch in the city at the Nehru Maidan has been ruined by miscreants. The officials of the ground say that it will take over Rs.1 lakh to restore the pitch to its original condition. Although the incident occurred on Wednesday, the culprits are yet to be identified. The damage to the pitch has resulted in the postponement of the Hangyo inter-school league matches scheduled for September 16. Balakrishan Pai, who has been associated with the Dakshina Kannada Cricket for nearly 50 years, said: “This is what happens when a sports field is let out for functions and exhibitions.” He said that the association had recently spent over Rs. 70,000 on preparing the pitch. “It has all come to nought. We have to start from scratch,” he said.

President of the district’s cricket association Srikantha Pai said: “We just want our ground restored to its original shape by the corporation,” and added that a complaint had been filed with the Panambur Police Station. Superintendent of Police N. Sateesh Kumar said that the investigations were on and the culprits would soon be identified.

Bad act by the miscreants. There is something wrong with the minds of some of our Indian brothers. They are always hell bent in destroying people, property, principles and prized institutions of our country without any sense of reason. Taking the law into their own hands, these people seem to terrorise the citizens with these untowardly acts. What a shame that we talk of terrorism in other countries while in our own backyard these acts are rampant.

The recent damaging of the cricket pitch at Nehru Maidan is also one such timid act by the hooligans. Firstly, the ground should be protected against damage and even if these grounds are given for public functions some kind of penalty should be imposed on the organisers when such damage occurs. I also know that the pitch is almost on an open land where people walk to and fro without even knowing if there is a playing pitch. In such a case, the authorities should barricade the pitch square which will ensure that nobody damages the pitch.

But then, in our mad society, the barricade also will be removed by the hooligans and the pitch destroyed. While the association strives to promote the game through their hard working officials, it is a pity that their service comes to nought when anti social elements harm their good work. The society should come together in unity to act against such elements and condemn them for ever. There is no place for ill will and fanatic individuals who are brain washed to destroy the good of the land. Our country will be happier without these elements. Let common sense prevail !
