Udupi, Sep 15: In a road accident that occured at Kannangar bypass near here, a young bus conductor named Riaz(25) from Ucchila died, after the express bus he was travelling in, collided with a truck moving ahead, in the morning of Sunday September 14.

The bus driver Rajesh also was injured and admitted into a private hospital in Mangalore, the police have informed.  Cleaner of the truck Hemant Kumar, driver Raju and several others were injured in the accident. The bus was rashly driven, and the fact that the road is full of pot holes, had made its movement haphazard. Due to the impact of the collision, passengers seated in the front side of the bus were thrown on to the road. By the time the truck changed its course to right side of the road in an effort to avoid the bus from hitting it, the bus hit it from the left, when Riaz fell down and was crushed under its wheels. The body could be removed only after lot of efforts as the truck was loaded with iron bars.

It may be added, that the national highway 17 has been prone to accidents of the similar kind of late, because of its battered surface and huge craters, forcing the vehicles to take a zig-zag ride, endangering passengers as well as pedestrians.

When will this rash driving in the bad roads of coastal Karnataka end, supposed to be the most educated district? When will schools in the most educated district introduce a "value of human life" moral science class. Humans are killed everyday by road accidents & this is the major killer all over the world, more in developing countries & the highest in coastal Karnataka. We really need very strong punitive laws & its honest implementation. When will be drivers/transport lobby be punished like in gulf countries? It is like, "Who will tie the bell to the cat?" Many times I feel with a sense of shame that we citizens as a whole still do not deserve the democracy after 60 yrs of independence.
