M'lore: Recent Disturbances - Many Released, 128 People Still in Jails

Mangalore, Sep 17: Western range inspector general of police (IGP) Ashit Mohan Prasad has informed that out of 161 persons arrested in connection with various incidents of pelting stones at the policemen and frictions during the protest by Christians, 101 were released. As of now, 60 persons remain in jail. For want of space in Mangalore sub-jail, 44 of them have been lodged in Madikeri jail, with the remaining 16 accommodated in Mangalore jail, he added.

In various cases related with attacks on churches, 68 people have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. A total of 900 police personnel were deployed to preserve law and order in the city and elsewhere in the district. In all, 71 people have been injured, out of which 26 are policemen and remaining 45, members of the general public, he revealed.
