Mangalore, Nov 4: The Sanskrit translation of Dr S L Bhairappa’s famous Kannada novel ‘Aavarana,’ was released at T V Raman Pai convention hall on Monday November 3.
Sandhya S Pai, editor of Kannada weekly ‘Taranga’, released the novel. Speaking on the occasion, she said that Bhairappa’s novels lead one to think. He has two kinds of readers—those who oppose him saying that his novels create enmity in society, and others who support him for his creative and thought-provoking literature, she opined.
Dr H S Vishwas, translator of the novel, said that ‘Dharmashree’ is his first novel and ‘Aavarana’ is the recent one. Bhairappa dealt with religious conversion in both novels. He tried to uphold the greatness of Indian culture in all his novels, informed Dr Vishwas.
Bhairappa has studied history in detail, before writing the novel. Moreover, he has great life experience. In ‘Aavarana; a Vokkaliga (‘shoodra’) girl marries a Muslim. Many question as to why Bhairappa didn’t make his protagonist a Brahmin girl instead of Vokkaliga, he said. Dr Vishwas added that the caste of the character does not make any difference; it is the issue which is more relevant.
H assured that all the novels of Bhairappa will be translated into Sanskrit. Dr Vishwas said that despite most Kannada writers being familiar with Sanskrit, the ancient language has been sidelined in schools today because of political reasons. Many oppose it, saying that Sanskrit belongs to a particular community. One should keep in mind that, not only Brahmins, buts Buddhist scholars too were using this language, he added.
District in-charge minister Krishna Palemar presided over the function. Pandit Narasimhacharya was present on the dais.
