Udupi: 1000-yr Yellur Temple Renovation in Aug’ 08

Udupi, Apr 20: The Varshika 'Jaatre' Mahotsava (annual festival) of the ancient Mahatobhara Sri Veshweshwara Devasthana and 'Sanidhya Sankocha Punar Nirmana', renovation and re-installation ceremony was held on Friday April 18 at the religious site Yellur near here.
The world famous historical Visveshwara temple believed to be about a thousand years old is in for an overhaul and renovation by the organizing committee. The significance of this ancient monumental 'Kshetra' is that unlike other temples - it does not have an idol or deity, instead a 'Shiva Linga' is worshipped and venerated here.
Presently all the surrounding sites of the temple premises namely the Naga Brahma Kshetra, Veerabadra Kshetra and Veeraanjaneya Kshetra renovation work have already been completed. In fact this year the renovation work of the periphery of the temple has been done in advance.
However, with regard to the main place of worship viz., the Visveshwara temple work on which has yet to commence, a huge budget of nearly Rs 6 crore has been allocated. A decision was taken during the stage function held on Friday April 18 that the work on renovation of the main temple will begin on August 20 while the date of the Brahmakalasa at the temple has been fixed at March 12 next year.
Present at the function were Arya Laxmi Narayan Alva, state advocate general, B V Acharya, Pademane Jayanth Rai, temple managing trustee, Prafulla Shetty Yeloor Gutthu, Kunjoor Durga temple Managing trustee B Mohan Rao, Kalatoor temple Managing trustee Krishnamurthi Pavitra Pani K L Kundanthaya, Pradhana tantri, Kenja Sridhar tantri. Mumbai Samithi and renovation committee members, temple trustees and others were present on the occasion.
