Beltangady, Jun 4:
The state human rights commission has issued an order to prevent cattle from wandering on the roads.

In many cases, accidents are caused by cattle on the roads and many have lost their lives too.

The order is the result of a letter by Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Dr D Veerendra Heggade to the deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada district and to the president of State Human Rights Commission S R Nayak.

Background

Dr D Veerendra Heggade travels to Dharwad every month to visit his SDM educational institutions and to inspect the Dharmastala Rural Development Project as well. During his visit, he noticed cows and buffalos lying in the middle of the highway in Uttara Kannada district, even at night.

Concerned that the problem would pose a threat to the lives of commuters, Dr Heggade wrote a letter to Uttara Kannada DC Krishnayya stating that accidents could be prevented by taking measures to keep the cattle off the roads. He urged an order to be issued to each gram panchayat in this regard. The DC implemented the order, with a copy sent to Dr Veerendra Heggade also.

Dr Heggade discussed this matter with S R Nayak during on the latter's visit to Dharmasthala and also showed him a copy of the letter to the DC of Uttara Kannada.

S R Nayak took the matter seriously, and has now issued an order to the DCs of all the districts in the state intimating them to curb the movement of cattle on the roads. Moreover, he also directed them to send a report confirming the implementation of his order within two months.

The police departments have also acted on the matter and issued relevant orders.

Dr Heggade has requested all the gram panchayat heads to create an awareness in this regard.

Thanks to Dr Hegde for such an initiative. This policy could save several lives and also prevent road accidents. Similar to this we also find dogs on NH’s which is also a cause of road accidents especially among the two wheeler riders. Besides this there are few places where we find goats and sheep on public main roads as road blockers, certainly there is also a need to brig about a common policy of preventing domestic animals on roads.
