Karkala, Jun 22: Xavier D'Mello, social worker and founder president of Belman St Joseph's aided higher primary school's old students' association and ex-president of Belman gram panchayat, has offered to donate his body after his death to KMC, Manipal.

Donating particular organs may not be a rarity, but it is not often one comes a person who has willingly let his entire body be used for the advancement of the medical field.

Xavier has already signed the consent letters at KMC to donate his eyes and his body for medical and experimental purposes.

Lauding his generous gesture and his inclination towards social welfare, KMC Manipal anatomy deparment head Dr Antony Silvan D'Souza said that Xavier's gift has shown light to many other donors and that he has also helped young medical students this way.

Xavier has been actively involved in social service right from his student life and has been sensitive and responsive to social issues and problems. He has also taken up many other responsiblities like serving as a member of Karkala taluk panchayat, founder member of Belman Lions Club, president of Church CYM, member of Palana board, and state kernel devt board member, Kaup MESCOM adivisory committee president, president of Kaup Kisan Cell and as Kaup Youth Congress secretary for 10 years. He is presently a member of Karkala APMC and taluk panchayat.

Being a social worker, he did not want his body to be buried, and instead wanted to be of use even after his death. Hence he decided to donate his body wholeheartedly to KMC.

Thank you Raj for that information.
So it clears doubts so many who were saying - the body has to be returned to dust after death - I think it doesnot matter immediately or at a later date.
But see the knowledge that dead body has given to the budding doctors to help the living bodies function well.

According to the Royal College of Surgeons, a shortage of bodies donated to medical science is threatening the teaching of anatomy, which it believes is vital for tomorrow's doctors and surgeons. The college is predicting a cadavar (dead body) shortage of nearly 30 per cent this year and estimates that UK medical schools need at least 1,000 bodies each year. The fall in donations is due in part to the Human Tissue Act 2004, which has stopped the utor of an estate saying that it was the known wish of the deceased to donate their body. People must now leave specific consent with their signature witnessed.

A body can be kept for up to three years and the regulation of donated bodies is rigorous, with a strict code of conduct in the dissection room, which includes only exposing the specific body part being examined. There is even an annual thanksgiving service held at Southwark Cathedral, attended by about 800 people, including family and friends of donors as well as medical students. At the end of the period, the body will usually be cremated or buried at a special memorial service.

Finally going to dust.Mr.Frank hope your doubt is cleared.

GIVING BACK TO GOD THROUGH DONATION IS A WONDERFUL ACT. IT WILL HELP REDUCE CEMETRY SPACE (IN MUMBAI PEOPLE ARE CREMATING OR DONATING). WHAT IS TO BE REMEMBERED OF THE DEAD PERSON IS NOT THE CEMETRY BUT WHAT GOOD HE DID WHILE ALIVE. THAT IS ENOUGH AND IMPORTANT. NOT BEING BURIED OR RETURNING TO DUST WHICH IS FIGURATIVE.

As a social personality it is NOT a big story! Many ordinary people are now generously doing so. Please also place their good will on the web record!Remember that after death you do not have the power to ute your will and how many kith and kin will really carry out your wishes?!!-ijss.

Wilma Dubai and to all those wishing and publishing to Donate their bodies after death.

It shows how little you know about life. We dont know what is going to happen to us the next seccond.

We may meet with an accident, get burned, drowned and our body totally destroyed beyond recognition. Examples of this are in front of our eyes evryday.

Apart from God no one knows what our future will be. When some one donates his/her body, it means they know their future and death. How surprising.

Since the future is not in our hands, in my opinion it is better not go public in such matters, but do it privately, between you/family and the receiving hospital.

Why you are all coming to so many conclusions on Mr. X. D'Mello of Belman donating his body for a NOBLE CAUSE, after his death. If you all donot want to donate, do not. If you are the owner of his body, then you all decide.
And as for the family members, Now-a-days, they will be very glad, by this kind of gesture of a person, so much burrial/church or whatever expenses are saved, which money can be utilised for a good cause, in the name of that person.

Our body is a temple of God and the Holy Spirit. It is a free gift granted by the Creator for rent with no cost and for an unspecified period, to do things as per His wish.

We are not the owners of our bodies. We are from dust to dust. Life is a short role to play and a specific assignment to perform.

To announce Donating 'body' is not a big issue. Relatives/Dear ones should not make hassle after his death. Some people do the same without much propaganda.

    Mr.Maxim Dsouza, Mangalore

He just announced. After death he will become great man. In some cases even it's difficult to find 'body'. Announcement remain intact in files. May be inspiration received from body laid down of St.Xavier in Goa.

Meaningful n beautiful comments by Mr.N. Frank, India/Ksa. People are trying to expose them self by Mr.Xavier's way, but there are many people in this surroundings they donate their body or other organs of body. As if Xavier, is doing such a wonderful job of Social work and it's a special job can save all the lost souls for the kingdom of God, helping people in their need. As the scripture says, God created us from the dust and we to have go back to the same. In my point of view, it is not a noble cause, as far as our family agree. For the medical purpose there is artificial things are available like the original, so no need of live Body's.

    My dear -Frank,
Don't try to interpret scriptures to advance a new way of thinking, though you have every right to do so.
Literal interpretation would always give different meanings to different persons.

Soul & Body are part of each other till they depart, afterwards soul reaches for judgment while body decays. Decaying of body isn't required for salvation, but on the final judgment day they will be united whether its ash or in dust or non-existent to enjoy the fruits of our works of faith- together fully( don't doubt creators capabilities).

Lokesh's (movie actors body was donated to a medical college though their custom is to burn).
Respect a person's noble gesture & willingness to help medical students rather than what might happen after his departure, though these questions are relevant at present.
The money saved by not burrying could be utilised for another noble deed as well.

The greatest commandment of God is to give our life for others.? or to die saving others.

I wonder what would be the situation, to give our dead body, which is good for nothing to others.

Besides, the owner of the dead body is the creator, do we have the right to donate something that does not belong to us.??

God said, dust thou art and to dust thou will go. But dead bodies used by the medical students may take years and years to get buried. Will the soul rest in peace till the body goes back to dust.

Normally only after the burial/burning of a dead body, do the home members feel the religious rituals are complete, and start normal life again.

As noted by Sunil, will the home family members agree or Will they be able to lead a normal life, knowing that their loved one's buriel is pending.??
