Bangalore: Jesuit University for All Jesuit Educational Institutions Mooted

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network -  Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 3: A Jesuit University for all educational institutions run by the Society of Jesus in different parts of the country, especially in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and other major cities in the country is under active consideration of the Jesuits, according to Fr Sunith Prabhu, Director of Bangalore’s St Joseph’s College of Commerce.

Answering a question at a press commerce in the St Joseph’s College of Commerce on whether the college was considering any move to get affiliated to the Christ University in Bangalore if the controversy over the status of the deemed universities, presently pending before the Supreme Court, was resolved, Fr Prabhu said the college, being an autonomous institution affiliated to the Bangalore University, had no such plans and instead ''there is proposal to form a Jesuit University for the educational institutions run by the Jesuits in the country.”

The St Joseph’s College of Commerce, which is accorded the status of an autonomous institution, is empowered to frame its own syllabus, set questions papers and conduct examinations but the degrees are awarded by the Bangalore University. The College runs three undergraduate programmes in B.Com, BBM and B.Com (Travel and Tourism) and also has a number of Post Graduate Diploma and Certificate programmes in various fields of Commerce and Management. NAAC has accorded ''A” Grade to the College.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognized the institution as a ''College with Potential for Excellence,” and the Bangalore University has granted the College recognition as a Centre for conducting Research Programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degree programmes from the year 2010. However, the Bangalore University has not sorted out the problems with regard to allotting Ph.D .students, which is a stumbling block, said College Principal Dr Lily N David.

Dr David said the UGC has sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore to the College for its research and academic programmes, of which Rs 75 lakh has already been spent.  The undergraduate courses in the College were immensely popular and the Placement Service facility instituted by the College has helped in over 3,000 students getting jobs even before they pass out. Some of the leading companies like Goldman Sachs, Ernst & Young, Google, De Shaw, HP, Deloitte were among the participants in the campus recruitment drives every year.

''Fears over recession and economic slowdown has not affected the placement service programme,” she said.

Fr Sunith Prabhu said the College has been organizing national seminars every year since the last 10 years and a two-day seminar on ''Higher Education 2020: New Strategies for Empowerment and Growth” would be held on September 6 and 7 at the College auditorium.

Principals, Vice Principals, IQAC Coordinators, teaching faculty and research scholars from all over the country were expected to participated in the two-day seminar, which will be inaugurated on September 6 by Prof I M Savadatti, former Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, and Dr R S Deshpande, Director of Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, will be delivering the key-note address. Dr Xavier Alphonse, SJ, eminent educationist and Chairperson of ICRDLE, Chennai, who is also an UGC member, will be chief guest at the valedictory session on September 7.

Of the over 85 technical seminar papers received, 46 have been accepted and presented during the seminar. All the seminar papers will be presented in a compendium, which will be released during the inaugural session, Seminar Convenor Dr A M Sheela, said adding there will be four technical sessions.

The St Joseph’s College, a leading minority educational institution in Bangalore, was established by the French Missionaries in 1882 for imparting higher education to all deserving students irrespective of caste, creed and community. It was subsequently handed over to the Jesuits and the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society has been managing the college and other educational institutions run by the Society of Jesus in Bangalore.  A separate department for commerce education was established in 1949, which became an independent college as the St Joseph’s College of Commerce in 1972.

While the Jesuits take their own time to get going the Bishop of Mangalore should set up the St Joseph's University combining medical, engineering and all diocesan run colleges. High time when we have the established campuses all within a radius of 200 kms.

May I make a correction to my comment which can cause some misunderstanding for the readers.
The Sisters of Charity, the Jesuits and such specially formed religious charity organizations are totally different than the mainline Church institutions. JESUS in HIS brief earthly ministry of three and a half years, have displayed three very important ministries. HE Proclaimed the GOSPEL-FED THE HUNGRY AND HEALED THE SICK. So, it is the most cardinal duty of the Christian Churches of all denominations to spread the GOSPEL, feed the hungry and heal the sick. GOD expects every believer to take part in these ministeries, especailly the Priests and Pastors. But, those divinely commissioned activities are pushed back and now the Churches are in competition to have the greatest number of institutions where hardly the divine commission is practiced or introduced, and the heavy load of the daily administration is carried by the divinely called people.

I have been impressed by the Jesuits my whole life. I know some Jesuits in Germany, who teach at High Schools (Gymnasium) and at two universities.
And I know a Jesuit, he is Indian and he lives and works in Bihar.
Jesuits run lot of educational institutions and universities in India and they have done so much for the Indian society and educated and skilled young Indians.
It should be said that the Jesuits are the elite of the Catholic Church.
And I would like to mention Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini a well known Cardinal who passed away a few days ago.
He was an outstanding Cardinal and priest, he belonged to the Jesuits.
Cardinal Martini died last Friday aged 85.
Cardinal Martini was regarded as a free spirit and he raised his voice and said: “ The Church should not be afraid of free spirits. Unfortunately, it is... because of insecurity.”
The former Archbishop of Milan was loved by many for his liberal views and his ability to listen to everyone. He retired in 2002 when it revealed he was suffering from a form of Parkinson’s disease, which hurt his chances of becoming Pope three years later.

His liberal opinions, on issues such as condom use, in vitro fertilisation and gay relationships, sometimes raised the hackles of Church conservatives. In a recent interview he said: “The Church has been left 200 years behind. Why doesn’t it rouse itself? Are we afraid?”

Cardinal Martini was a great man and he was a complex man and his words should not be simplified.
His first love was the Word of God. He spoke about the importance for the Church and its followers to go back and give more importance to the Word of God.
I enjoyed reading his monthly reflections on the Corriere della Serra, an Italian newspaper.
He was a fully fledged academic but he did not have all the answers.
Cardinal Martini´s writings inspired me a lot.
The Society of Jesus runs lot of educational institutions in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata.
Most of students who graduated at any Jesuit school or university found easily well paid jobs.
But most important during their time as students they learnt to figure out solutions, to reflect and received a meaning of life.
It is very important that more and more young educated and skilled young men join the Jesuits.
The spiritual guidance and the academic research done by Jesuits is outstanding. I always enjoyed talking with Jesuits on various topics. Their profound knowledge for example in history, psychology, sociology astonished me and their deep interpretation of current affairs.
Christians need the Society of Jesus.

Congrats. Times are changed. Priests now a days are trained to multitask. They obtain administrative degrees besides seminary studies as they offer selfless service for the society as whole inclusive. Mistakes and favourtism do happen by some since they are humans and are in relationships

The Jesuit University concept will be a bold and promising step in the right direction. Jesuits have created some of the best intellectual milestones in India, and this will be a beginning of another monumental gift for secular India.

We feel so proud in learning these fine achievements from a distance and are always eager to be part of the process. The journey is always tough because the University needs people of quality and integrity to pool their thoughts, plans and programs, but knowing the talents and expertize of the Jesuits they can climb the mountains and cross the rivers because of their values and their aspirations for the causes that are unique and selfless.

God bless the Jesuits in all their University pursuits, and we shall always seek God's help to help the Jesuits in all their noble ventures.

Mr. Adarsh, ABHIMANA does not increase when some corrupt politicians change names of cities to cover up their misdeeds and failures. You must very well know what kind of Abhimana the name of our city Mangalore or Mangaluru evinces after the attacks on women. Has the condition of the people in any of these cities improved after the names were changed, except unwanted expenditure in crores, when so many mouths could have been fed with that same money. Change your attitude first and then think of changing names. And as one comment aptly says, Did the government ask us people before they changed the names. Did any one of them mention this in their election manifestos?

Man you don't even know these priest and nuns are working hard to serve the people whereas handfull of people talk like you.

Being a catholic i have a kind request with you people.Whenver u start something, organise something in karnataka kindly do not ignore kannada.I know that the kannada christian community is too small, but all those catholics in karnataka know kannada.because of language flexibility christian views, good news has failed to reach all other non christian kannada people.Karnataka is for kannada as other states are for their languages. If karnataka starts ignoring kannada, who else will save the language? After all kannada sounds good compared to many other languages while spoken. It has a rich cultural and literal heritage. Those who blame kannada are actually who do not know well about kannada.Speaking kannada fluently is defenitely an art...Kindly do not think im promoting regionalism.I dont like people who dont like kannada and who do not have respect towards this great language.becoz they are do not know anything about it. Karnataka is tho only state which respects and lives in co operation with other linguistic people.

Mr. Dilip RV. You are indeed exposing a very cardinal spiritual
issue. The Catholic Church is doing far greater service than any other Christian denominations in India through eductional-humanitarian and social services. But we are simply ignoring the Biblical mandate of the Priests. Are they called to run the administration and other responsibilites associated with all the Church related institutions? They are called to serve the believers and even total strangers to meet their spiritual needs. College-Hospital-school administrations must be given to the honest lay people of the Churches, and they can do it far better than the Priests who are theologically trained. This problem is seen in all the Christian denominations, and it is too late now to change it.

C K DAYANANDA, MANGALURU - Your suggestion has no bearing on the subject - FYI the Jesuits who are doing a great service in the field of Education are more concerned about the betterment of humanity / society - than in the way a City is spelt - Further the people who are ruling the state at the moment are not bothered about this once beautiful Garden City has now been renamed as garbage City -

Being a Catholic, my opinion is that the Spiritual Leaders (Priests, Nuns, etc.) should refrain from taking up administrative positions in Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, etc. They should strive to fulfill the spiritual needs of the needy.
By being in administrative positions, in some cases, the whole religion and the community itself is blamed due to the misdeeds of the few.
It is but human that the spiritual leaders also exhibit negative characteristics like ego and nepotism.
Why should the whole community take blame for it?
