US media sees Modi 'brought down to earth'

WASHINGTON, Feb 11 (IANS): While US officials refrained from comment on Aam Aadmi Party's massive victory in Delhi elections, the New York Times saw "a defeat for Prime Minister Modi" in the results.

"Fresh from the diplomatic high of a successful summit meeting with President Obama, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been brought down to earth by domestic politics," the influential US daily said in an editorial. "Ordinarily, elections in New Delhi would not draw international attention," the Times said.

But since sweeping to power last year with the biggest national election victory in three decades, Modi and his BJP have generated "an aura of invincibility" winning a succession of other state elections, it said.

"The election won't affect Modi's hold on the prime minister's office and the federal government," the Times said. "But it will increase the enormous pressure to deliver on his economic and governance promises even while making that harder."

Some Indian analysts also saw the defeat as a rejection of the anti-minority biases and violence spurred on by extremist allies of Modi's Hindu national party, it noted.

"After imploring Americans, Japanese and Chinese, as well as Indians, to believe in his vision, it is a good bet that no Indian federal budget will be more scrutinized for what it may, or may not, deliver on building infrastructure, reforming taxes and making a tangled, stratified system more efficient than the one Mr Modi is expected to make public by the end of the month," the Times said.

Many other major US newspapers like the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal chose to carry an Associated Press story about "Upstart party wins big in India's capital, in blow for Modi."

"While the results from last weekend's elections will not have any bearing on the structure of the federal government, they sent a clear message to Modi that he was not invincible," it said.

"They were also an indication of voters' frustration with endemic corruption," AP said.

Analysts, it noted viewed "the scale of the defeat of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party was a wake-up call for the government."

Church attacks in Mangalore brought downfall to the then ruling party in Karnataka.Similarly, recent church attacks in Delhi, illtreatment towards minority communities, cruel acts towards Innocent Nuns, Priests and peace loving humble people of Delhi during their recent peace march also revealed the outcome of wrong doing in the election results d yesterday. I am sure people in Power and ruling India might have already realized by now the outcome of destroying places of worship of any community. Time for Mr. Modi and team to realize their mistakes, learn from mistakes and treat all Indians equally irrespective of caste, creed and religion but I strongly doubt whether we are fortunate to see such thing in India as long as Mr. Modi and his team are in power and rule our great nation -India

I am very glad about the success of the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. There is no doubt Mr Kejriwal has done something uncommon, extraordinary and outstanding by scooping up 67 of the 70 Assembly seats in the capital. The polls were viewed by many analysts s a popularity test for Mr Modi, who had campaigned aggressively in Delhi for the BJP candidate, Kiran Bedi.
There is no doubt, the AAP mobilised the widespread discontent among ordinary people with conventional politics, offering them a new hope, of politics that offers clean and sensitive governance. What were the important issues in this election? Simply, the same bread-and-butter issues – corruption, water supply, energy, law and order – that dominated the previous New Delhi state election. Mr Kejriwal´s victory is an indication that voter dissatisfaction about these basic issues remains deep, despite Mr Modi´s promises to make everything better. But especially in Delhi, a city where natural resource constraints, corruption, and crime remain critical challenges. After the overwhelming victory of the AAP in Delhi an important question must find a solution, how can the AAP solve the enormous problems? The political programme of the AAP is very interesting and offers partly solutions. What I find too in the political programme, if possible to talk about a final political programme of the AAP, is, people, who support the idea of democratic socialism typically believe that decisions in a society should be made by considering the needs of all of the people, not just the wealthy or powerful. This applies to economic and social decisions. Some important beliefs among democratic socialists are that resources and wealth should be used to benefit all members of a society and that economic institutions should be controlled and owned by people who are affected by them. They also typically believe in the ideal of all members of a society having a voice in the decisions that affect them. This stands in contrast with the communist form of socialism, in which an all-powerful government owns all the resources and industries, and decisions are made for the people instead of by them. A society living in a system of democratic socialism also would be committed to meet the needs of all its citizens. A wide variety of needs would be met through social programmes that are designed to benefit every citizen and ensure a high quality of life. Examples of such programmes include universal childcare, free or subsidised education, national healthcare systems that provide access for all and other social services. And under democratic socialism, the government usually is envisioned as being controlled by the citizens, with the primary goal of making decisions to benefit society as a whole. This democracy would be characterised by equality among people as well. It is a dream, but sometimes dreams become true and the AAP could lead India one day to a better future.

I agree your definition and benefits democratic socialism and that should be the way ahead for our country. But here in India our fascist forces wanted to remove the word socialist from the constitution itself. The poor and common people who form the majority here according to them to be remain slaves of few rich. This is what BJP is now doing and their culture represents.

From 32 seats to 3 seats within months in front of Mr. Modi is simply the first term examination result, a big "F".

If Mr. Modi was not blowing lakhs for his custom-made suits, especially for the Republican day parade Rs. 10 lakhs, while the millions of India are half naked and wrapped in rags merely to hide their nakedness, the BJP could have a got some extra votes than this.

Besides his deliberate silence not telling openly stopping the Church attacks under his nose was a very serious blunder which has provoked the governments, leaders and people all over the world.

Nobody lost nor did anybody win either.

The Delhiites have just exercised their democratic rights and responsibilities instead of clumsily electing and then blaming their elected representatives like me and you.

AAP have made a lot of promises in their election manifesto which they may not be able to fulfil.

However if they are able to provide Delhiites with an improved and sustained law and order situation, corruption free government offices, affordable, clean and easily accessible health services, affordable education for children, subsidized electricity, water and gas for the low income households and/or minimum hourly wage system at par with capital cities in industrialized nations and most of all security for all then all remaining Indian states have a new form of government in the image of AAP to emulate.

usa has become very weak now.its trusted allies like germany and france want to leave it and have thier own independent foreign policy and have close relations with india and china.australia is also following the same way.

thier own fellow american countries like brazil, argentina, uragvay, paragvay, cuba, venezula, columbia, chile, mexico dont trust usa.only canada which is has miniscule population with sizable punjabis are thier only ally there.usa has become a joker now in front of the world.

In military might? they are second to none, even Modi wouldn't debate with that. Jeevan, If any one talks against BJP govt and Modi, you keep on calling them as a anti nationals, ISI, Pak agents etc. But now the people are tired with communal tensions, hatred politics etc. your right wing ideology will not work any more. People in this modern world looking for decent life, good job, good education, good entertainment etc. They don't want everyday protests, road shows, tensions, fightings in the name of religion. Everybody has the right to follow their own religion, but don't bring it to the streets and don't mix it with politics. People decided to put full stop for fringe element activities. You people will eat the dust very soon. All the like minded people are united irrespective or party, religion etc to show the exit to Modi, RSS cadres.
