Mangalore, Aug 19: Mangalore Bar Association has condemned the increasing incidents of assaults on lawyers in the district.

Association president SP Chengappa said that recently some miscreants had barged into the office of an advocate N Sukumar demanding 'hafta' and the police could not arrest the culprits.

He was speaking at a press conference here on Monday August 18. Even when protesters were protesting outside City Corporation against the water tariff hike, the police took into custody an advocate Yashwanth Maroli without any strong reason. Recently in Ulepady, the house of an advocate Dinesh Hegde was attacked by the mine owners who are engaged in an illegal mining in the premises, he added.

Citing an instance of the recent assault by the police on a group of lawyers from Udupi at Sirimane, Sukumar urged that in all the cases the guilty must be identified and stern action must be taken.

Vice-president Elizabeth Neeliyar, principal secretary Eshwar N Kottari and others were present.
