Mangalore, Aug 19: Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao inaugurated a Fitment Camp for the differently-abled at Wenlock hospital here on Tuesday August 19.
The camp was jointly organized by Dr Zakir Husain Memorial Trust and Praxy Fernandes Memorial Trust under the scheme of the Union ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Over 240 mobility and hearing aids and appliances were made available to differently-abled persons at the camp. This was the third such camp to be held in the state this year, the two being held at Suntikoppa and Nelamangala.
At the fitment camp, besides fitting Calipers and artificial limbs, arrangements were made for disbursement of 15 trycycles, 12 child wheelchairs, 20 adult wheelchairs, 65 crutches, 9 walking sticks of two kinds and 70 hearing aids. An additional 7 tricycles and 8 wheelchairs had already been dispatched to Kodagu, from where persons had come for the initial fitment camp in the city.
Organizers of the camp said that yet one more camp is to be conducted in Udupi and persons who have not been able to attend the Mangalore camp are being encouraged to attend the Udupi camp to take advantage of the benefits of the ADIP Scheme.
This is the first year that Dr Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust has conducted such camps outside of Uttar Pradesh, where it has been working in the areas of education, rural development, women's empowerment and health, especially handicapped welfare since 1986.
The camp also supported by doctors and personnel of KMC and Wenlock Hospital and the NGO 'Bhandavya'.
The camp was blessed by the Bishop Aloysius Paul D'souza of Mangalore. Dr C V Raghuveer, dean of Kasturba Medical College, Michelle, chairperson of 'Bhandavya' were chief guests. Dr J Prabhudev, DK Medical Officer presided over the inaugural function.
The city-based Kalkura Foundation will be organizing a Sri Krishna Children’s Fest at Kadri temple, as part of Janmashtami celebrations on Saturday, August 23.
Speaking to media persons on Monday, August 18, Pradeepkumar Kalkura, chairman, Kalkura Foundation, said that competitions like 'Kanda Krishna', 'Muddu Krishna', 'Balakrishna', 'Kishora Krishna', 'Sri Krishna', 'Yaksha Krishna', 'Radha Krishna', 'Yashodha Krishna', and a Sri Krishna quiz will be organized on the occasion.
Infants and children up to Class VII can participate in these competitions, dressing up as Sri Krishna, he added. Even mothers of the children can also participate as Radha and Yashodha in the related competitions. The age limit for the Yashodha competition will be relaxed to enable many mothers to participate. Children will be served ice-creams, 'peda', and warm milk. Winners will be awarded attractive prizes, informed Kalkura.
