Karkala, Aug 19: Life will not be worthwhile, if one has no memory of the past and no hope for tomorrow. Therefore, it’s essential to have serious thoughts about the future based on past memories of the language and a conceived vision for the future, said Na D Souza, veteran Kannada litterateur, on Monday August 18.

He was delivering the keynote address on 'Existing scenario of Kannada language and literature', held at the banquet hall of Hotel Prakash, and organized by the local literary union.

'Literature does not state anything new. Instead it states what it knows in definite terms which is the uniqueness of literature, said D’Souza.

Books are a replica of knowledge, as culture has been incorporated in it. Reading is an art and literary reading brings joy to the mind of the reader. However, owing to media invasion,  books have been losing their sheen. Despite increasing literacy levels, literates are losing the  habit of reading books, he added.

The programme was presided over by Tukaram Naik, president, literary union. Prof M Ramachandra, convener, literary union, welcomed the gathering. Bharati Shenoy compered the programme while Baby Eshwar proposed the vote of thanks.
