Udupi: Nation-wide Strike Elicits Lukewarm Response in District

Udupi, Aug 20: Members of various labour unions held a protest rally on Wednesday August 20, from the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) divisional office here, proceeding to Syndicate Bank regional office, LIC city office, and concluding at the Corporation Bank zonal office.

Local members of workers' unions of LIC, banks, BSNL, and the 'Dalit Sangarsha Samiti', were involved in the protest rally supporting the nation-wide strike called by various labour unions. Adamar Sripati Acharya of CITU, Vishwanath Rai, and Ramesh Mendon, of CPI (M), Derrick Rebello of bank workers union, and Jayant Malpe of Dalit Sangarsh Samiti, were  involved in the protest.

The strike backed by the CPI (M) in the district has witnessed lukewarm response. Shops and business establishments were open and no untoward incidents have been reported across the district so far. City buses including private buses were plying as usual though the frequency of buses between Mangalore and Kundapur were a little affected.
