Bangalore, Jan 28: The State government gets the credit for founding the first-ever government-funded autonomous institute that provides coordinated counselling and treatment for all the problems associated with diabetes under a single roof. The institute, set up in the premises of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology Hospital on Bannerghatta Road here, will be dedicated to the public by chief minister Yeddyurappa on Wednesday January 28.

None of the state governments including the union government has so far set up an institute exclusively for treating diabetics.

Diabetes, popularly known as sugar problem, is in fact not a disease. It is a disease caused by a defective working of a gland in the body. Therefore, diabetes has the potential of developing into various woes like visual defect, heart problem, kidney malfunctioning and problems relating to blood vessels. In some chronic cases, if enough care is not taken, the problem may lead to amputation of legs. Hence, proper treatment of diabetes involves treatment of different parts of the body.

The diabetics need to undergo blood, urine, eye, ECG, feet, blood pressure and several other tests regularly. Many get tired of frequenting various places to undergo these tests and prefer to remain aloof. They go to a hospital only after symptoms get aggravated. The government, realizing this problem, has set up this institute.
