  • Written explanation has been sought from the teacher: Minister
  • SFI, DYFI threaten to launch counter-agitation

Mangalore, Feb 3: Students’ union of the University College here allegedly forced boycott of classes and locking of classrooms on Monday, protesting against certain statements of a lecturer over the recent pub attack.

This was the second time in a week that students are said to have forced boycott of classes. They had done so on January 29, demanding suspension of English lecturer Pattabhirama Somayaji, alleging that he had hurt the “Hindu sentiments” by referring to Sri Rama Sene as “Ravana Sene” for carrying out the pub attack.

The union had given time to the management till Monday to suspend Mr. Somayaji and when the demand was not fulfilled, they called for a strike on Monday. District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar visited the college. The union members claimed that the Minister had promised to take “some action” against the lecturer in ten days. Mr. Palemar told The Hindu that he would ask for a written explanation from Mr. Somayaji. Vice-Chancellor of the university K.M. Kaveriappa also told The Hindu that Mr. Somayaji would be given a “chance to explain himself” before any action was taken.

Leader of the students’ union Shailesh Shetty, who also represents the Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishat, said that Mr. Somayaji had again made certain comments hurting the Hindu sentiments further. Mr. Somayaji said that in the “Solidarity meeting” he had condemned the pub attacks. “Pub verses public is a hate manufactured by the sangh parivar,” he said and added that he had not been given any notice by the university to give an explanation in writing.

Some students belonging to the minority community told The Hindu that they were abused and “forced” to boycott classes by other students.

The strike called by ABVP has been condemned by student organisations such as Students Federation of India and Democratic Youth Federation of India. The district committee of DYFI, in a press release said, the strike was “instigated by political powers”. It threatened to launch counter protests if any action was taken against Mr. Somayaji.

Based on the information provided from this news item, the lecturer is a real Hindu, who is upholding the ideals of Hinduism. I myself feel proud because of this lecturer,Knowing there is at least one Indian among the billions who had the courage to rightly call Ram Sena activists, as ravana sena. Ram Sena activists have not only disgraced Ram, but are all set to drag the much respected religion "Hindu" under the control of the sena's. While commending the wisdom and bravery shown by this lecturer at the right and place, I feel sad that students instead of learning the values of life and wisdom from him, have joined the political forces and are engaged in digging their own graves.

shrinath, Mate first of all the concerned hindu public should have file petition against Rama Sene for using the word Rama as its an insult to Lord Rama to use his name and create violence and hit girls. They can use any other names Karnataka Sene or Kudla sene whatever. Infact use of Gods name for these Senes should be banned first.

Those who criticise the students please verify the facts before you comment. The lecturer has reportedly used the Official place for his activities. Where does the question of Talibanisation come here.It is true that if some dogs bark at Hinduism it does not spoil. But barking dogs too need to be controlled to control their nuisance value.

In India the Constitution has given freedom of speech. If an act of hooliganism is condemned there is nothing wrong in it.

Where have all the sane persons of Mangaluru gone? If this kind of Talibanization continues unabated, the city will fast decline. It's very disgusting... If the Sangh Parivar is allowed to have its way and sway, the country will make a backward journey into the dark middle ages.

There is a systematic assault on Pattabhi, because he is a progressive teacher. He is a better hindu than the so called custodians of hinduism.Lord Rama would not have tolerated this inhuman attack on unarmed girls.I have been associated with Pattabhi for the last several years and I know very well that he is a man of integrity and honesty. He stands for justice and communal harmony. The university is proud to have such a scholar in its college.I appeal to all secular minded citizens to stand behind somayaji in these times of campus suffronization.Dear politicians, kindly do not pollute The Saraswathi mandir-the college campus-

Action should be taken against English lecturer Pattabhirama Somayaji. He should not have compared Sri Rama Sene as Ravana Sene in public or in class or in front of others. It's eligible for the defamation case as per IPC. This statement has degraded his value and status. He is in noble profession, i.e. teaching and he should behave properly and not by giving these types of negative statements or negative comparisons.

I could not understand the University College Union is it controlled by ABVP or by Students body of University College. In the college students learns what is democracy and freedom of speech. If students do not know how to respond their own lecturer statement what democracy they will practice after their student life. Dear students when u are students everybody wants u for their political end but once you finish your college no body want you, not even street dog will look at you. Secondly whatever Somayaji said whether appreciating or criticizing saying Ram Sena vs. Ravana Sena why it should bother you. Are you part of Sena. Your duty to unite students not divide. As there is a saying if the cap suits you wear it. What Saomyaji's statement suits you take it. If not do not bother. Think if the dog barks at moon, is the moon loose it shining. Let the dog bark and u do not bother. If you bother u are part of it.
