Udupi: ‘Synd Bank Marathon – 2009’ Against Terrorism on Feb 8

Udupi, Feb 4:
The ‘Synd Bank Marathon – 2009’, against terrorism, will be held here at 6.30 am on Sunday February 8. It is being sponsored by Syndicate Bank and has been organized by the district Athletics Association.
 
State home minister Dr V S Acharya, Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty, Syndicate Bank chairman George Joseph, Alva’s Education Foundation chairman Dr M Mohan Alva, Syndicate Bank director Vinay Kumar Sorake, international athlete Poonam Bhojanna, deputy commissioners of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, and superintendents of police of both districts will be the chief guests on the occasion.
 
Over 1,500 athletes from MEG / SAI Bangalore, Alva’s Moodbidri, Railways Hubli and Bangalore, as well as ITC Bangalore, are likely to compete in the marathon. 
 
The competitions will be held in three divisions—half marathons for women and men, five kilometre run for boys and girls up to 16 years of age and five kilometre run for senior citizens. 
 
The winners of men’s and women’s half marathons will be awarded a Hero Honda Glamour and a Hero Honda Pleasure, respectively.  The runners-up in both categories will be awarded Rs 15,000 each and the third place will fetch Rs 10,000 each.
 
Besides, 10 other winners will also be awarded cash, mementoes, and certificates. Certificates will be issued to all the athletes who complete the marathon. 
 
Those wishing to participate can enroll their names with Manipal Pre-university College physical education director Dinesh Kumar A. The last date for registering names will be Thursday February 5.  
 
MLA and Syndicate Bank Marathon Committee president Raghupathy Bhat, district Athletics Association president Balakrishna Hegde, Raghuram Nayak, Praveen Kumar Shetty, Dinesh Kumar, Hemanth Pillai, and Radhakrishna, were present at the press conference.
