Mangalore, Aug 19: Sitarama Mayya, principal, Sri Venkataramana Swamy (SVS) College, Bantwal, in a press meet here justified his stand and said, “ If one student is allowed to wear a scarf or a ‘burkha’, we will have to allow ‘namaz’ five times a day and the students from the Jain community might come naked as per their religious belief”.

Speaking on Wednesday August 19, he said that he is under pressure by some organizations so he decided to warn Aysha to not wear the scarf. He added that the organizations had also warned that other students will wear saffron shawls. But he did not name the organizations.

Mayya said that the college has its own regulations. He said that the institution has been functioning from 41 years and every year it has more than 20 percent of students from the minority community, but there have been no such issues in the history of the college.

“We will allow Aysha in college even today without the scarf,” said Mayya adding, “she is not banned from the college but she is not attending classes”.

He said that they were not allowing students to flaunt their religious affiliation and so students should obey the rules.

“Next year we are going to enforce the dress code and we will not allow any kind of dresses related to any religion”, said Ganesh Prabhu, correspondent of the college management. He added that they had not permitted students to wear the Sabarimala dress or ‘mala’.

“We are running an educational institution; we do not want any communal issues in our institution. We never discriminate between the students based on their religious identity. So many students from minority communities have studied in this college and are on good terms with the college”, said Prabhu.

The press meet was organized by the college regarding a programme at their institution.

Mangalore: Aysha Seeks DC’s Help to Resume Studies

Mangalore, Aug 19: Aysha Asmin, the first year B Com student of Sri Venkatramana Swami College (SVS), Bantwal, pleaded with the deputy commissioner (DC) on Wednesday August 19, to help her resume her education which has come to a stop after she was reprimanded for wearing a scarf over her head to college.

“I wear the scarf as per our religious belief, but the college principal has not allowed it”, Aysha told DC V Ponnuraj. “A student leader called Bharath warned me not to wear the scarf. Later, they started humiliating me and afterwards when I met the principal he also told me not to wear the scarf because then other students will begin saffron shawls”, she added.

Her father Mohammed said that other colleges were not willing to admit a new student now because classes have started nearly a month ago. He pleaded that for one year, his daughter be allowed to continue in the same college.

Ponnuraj said that he will send a notice to the principal of the college and would also write to the government. He added that the collegiate education board will intervene in this issue as it can give directions to the college.

Aysha has now stopped attending college, and remains at home even as internal exams are being held.

Jamath-e-Islami Hind leader Shabbir, and Students Organization of India convener Nisar were present during the submission of the memorandum to the DC.

I think if scarf does not go away, hindu organizations must call upon its people to wear saffron with religious mottifs printed on it.saffron caps as well.that is the best form to practice secularism. My be then they will realise how a dress code can be a source of inconvenience for them.Pseudo secularists may say rubbish.During the khalistan movement in the 70's the taxis of drivers wearing turbans were rejected in Bombay, because they were sikhs.Turbans and people inside them were burnt alive post Indiraji's death.

Well, we know the problem we need constructive comments for a solution. Amidst of countries like china or rest thinking to break India based on caste, religion etc - we need solution to our current issues not mount on top of what we have, we Indians provide solution on ares like Medicines,Software,Energy so on.. while this is important issue for our country why don''t we brainstorm for solution to it so that we can live peacefully.

Let us base our faith on religious scripture like Vedas,Bible, Quran & Guru Granth - based on these books, agree on what is common to all of us and leave the differences aside. Have Nationwide debate get best of brains who represent a community to sort out the difference - In current situation is everyone of us is a loser including political parties , Though BJP Bans pub culture,Ban on veil,Ban on conversion,Ban on Hindus befriending non-Hindus, communal riots - none are getting benefited out of it and this strategy has failed. Root cause is we have forgotten our Creator and his commands,so we need to get back to our basics.

Generation before us did not fight like this infact they complimented each other reason being they were holding value system of scriptures while today we are holding ideas of evil leaders. Let us get a frame work which is common to all faiths and live with it peacefully.

This issue is blown out of proportion. Both the college and the Student (Aysha) need to be more tolerant and flexible. I go to college here and see a lot of students covering their heads in black scarfs or wearing clothes, ornaments as per their religion. Those who wear scarfs, have salwar or some other dress covering full body and a scarf on head which is not covering their faces. However, if the pictures shown above of Aysha is how she wants to go to class, it is a lot to ask for.

If I am a teacher, the least I would expect is to be able to see my students (at least face). She should be allowed to wear whatever she wants as long as it does not hinder the process of education. If thats not acceptable to the college or to Aysha, then I hope she finds another college that allows her dress (not just scarf).

It is very clear from the Principal that He is under the pressure from BJP supporters and since BJP is the ruling party He has taken the initiative. Let her wear her scarf. If need be I am prepared to come and join and protest against the attitude of the college management.

I strongly agree with Dr. Veerendra Hegde from Dharmastala. Here everyone has their own ego that stops us doing something good. I strongly believe if there are dress codes we have to obey those. It clearly states Ayesha''s stubborness for not going to school. Removing scarf inside the campus is not a big issue. Communal problems starts from here itself. The principle is right in a way. There are some organizations they just wait for these chances.

There won''t be any uniformity if one person has allowed to do something on their own. We need to educate in every aspects of life. Every one has their own beliefs. But if you show your religion in the school it might creat more problems. No one is objecting practicing the faith outside the school ground. We really need a diversity and well cultured society. Inside the school everyone is on the same page. Students need to study in the college. Institution teaches everything and same time teaches us to respect other religions too.

I studied in catholic school and we were sitting next to schedule caste kids. Our teachers (and also nuns) never taught us anything against with other religion. So there is no descrimination against any one. Teachers are our second parents. If you respect your parents learn to respect your teachers. I think Ayesha should continue her studies at the same college and also obey the dress code.

Some schools in the U.S. will ban students for carrying a Bible or wearing a cross. Their policy is that religion must be inside the house. The person wearing a cross is not going to hurt anybody but the person feels some sort of spiritual satisfaction. As Mr. Prakash D"Souza has indicated, in the olden days, both the Hindu and Muslim girls, and even some Christians girls used to wear scarf. But the modern trend in the western dress discarded the scarf.

The college has to take stern actions, if somebody comes to college half and fully naked. If a person wants to cover most of their body, that is their personal choice. If they are hiding any weapons, then check them before entering the campus. It is very sad and pathetic to see, how the society is changing fast as an arena of friction in the name of religion. Let us all work for peace, not to create friction.

It was a tradition for all indian girls to wear scarf before now all the girls have loose their shame and stared wearing tight dresses to show their beauty but still they are some girls existing who does not want to reveal their beauty and want to practice this.

At that time no one objected but now since she belongs to minority, she has been harrassed in the name of religion . she is right from her stand. Wearing modest clothes is not as easy as removing cloths now. Student organizations which support a particular community are to be banned from campus, they are good only for starring (sex through sighting) at girls. Modest coverings (clothes) are protection for woman from such criminals. Burqa is only a shape given, othewiuse complete covering of body with any kind of good cloth is the real burqa.

Teach our sisters (any religions) to wear and not to remove. I guess Aysha can wear full covered loose dress with face closed with dupatta if college doesnt want her to wear a shaped black burqa. May Allah guide all.

I don’t agree the way our Euducational Instrutions are running. 1. Dress code is not the issue as we all have passed out from the college & till date no one had a Problem. I am sure, if today if that Principal is running that college… he has passed out from some college where his classmates were following their Religious dress code. He did not have the Problem… but today if his students are wearing following there religious dress code, he has a problem. 2. Instead of stopping the students or banning the students on some dress code… educate them, provide them the reason & support them. As the Princy said in the press meet…he want to bring the future citizens of this country. If that is the case, how come he got up once fine morning & told no religious dress code in is college.. He is not the new Princy for this college… he is Running this college for past few years… 3. If some Organizations tell him that, his family members are not following the dress code of the religion, what will be his stands? Change his town, Ask his family to leave the town or face the negative elements of the community.

Remember he is a principal, he want to bring the future citizens of this country. 4. We in UN, or around the world clam India is a secular Country. We teach the same in the school. If you think what we are doing now is wrong… stop proclaim & teaching the kids,,,, its like “ big sound, No picture”….. Like wise in most of the Middle east country..teach only that is followed in the Country… not what is there in the books. 5. I think the Princy needs to be educated more on Religion ethics. Even Hindus have religion code like Mangalsutra, Men wear the Wedding rings, KumKum, Bands on there hands & chains & thread around there neck. Namas on there forehead. Lot many to add, I think need to ban this also. 6. This are the youths of the Nation, give them the freedom & you will have your freedom. Just bcos some bunch of fools out in the street cry… does not mean that,….. we follow that fool.

If this is the case very soon… I think all the religions should provide the permission by the government to start there own school for there community. 7. Last but not the least… I saw lot of people posting there comments, I love to read & put my thoughts too. I think it high time that we start a moment to clean up our own society. For the support of 26/11, whole Mumbai came together… For Pink cheddy Campaign so many people around the world came to gather….. why not to clean up our own backyard…

If one wants to be in the intitution one has to adhere to its rules and regulation''s. It is not the duty of the pricipal to tell each and everyone the norms of the college. when one want''s to go out of the way its his or her resposibility to ask the principal and find out. There may be some groups pressurising that is not a issue here.

Just look at the photo how can you identify her. Tomorrow a terrorist also can enter the college with that type of dress code. So guy''s and girl''s lets not make mountain out of a mole hill,Let the pricipal handle it,If she want''s to study let her if not it''s her right not to study.

Once into a institution its the duty of the student to follow the norms set by the college. If this lady is so very bent on following relegious norms she should have clarified it well in advance before taking an admission here. Its not like age old times that this is the only institution around. I was a student of minority institution and we were asked not to wear Bindis,Bangles and Flowers to school as it distracted studies.Though I hailed from a very orthodox family my mother accepted these rules as it was our decision to study in that organisation.Once in a organisation whether for work or for study or for hospitality its our moral responsibility to follow the norms set by them as they would have given a lot of thought on it before setting it and those norms are set by a panel of people after discussion and not a single man''s will and wish.

Hello Mr. Principal, Any clothing/dress that is modest and non-provoking MUST be encouraged. Religious beliefs are a part of our INDIAN community and we are all proud of it. Can you define trousers or shirts as non-religious, even if the style is western.

Can you define bangles, anklets, rings by religious beliefs? Will you stop rakhis, other religious threads, nammas, ? Can you erase the names of the students to be more secular, names too define a religious belief. Can you start serving PORK and BEEF in your canteen because those who object are religious? We need to be religiously TOLERANT not ban religions!!!

I am surprised that such highly educated people commit such blunder. What can we say of the uneducated? Yes, if any clothes or accessories worn by the students advertise or evangelise the names or messages of religious beliefs, such acts must be avoided in a secular college. But if the picture given of Aysha here is what someone is objecting, I really wonder if this principal is a clone of Mr. Sarkoszy who does not understand a sikh wearing a turban or a less that 1% people of France wearing a veil.

This is INDIA where all religions are respected because the ultimate message of every religion is to do good and avoid evil. Did you ever checked the benches and walls all over the college of the great graffiti and art work of the students? Use your energies and power in the right way.

As Mr, Mayya Rightly said, school cannot change rules for every individual as per their needs. Don’t make issues on your personal or religious dress codes. I must say at least parents must understand and convince their children about it instead making issues.

This is what exactly i was telling to Shenoy maamu. If i had to follow my great great grandfathers tradition i would have been to schools and colleges with a simple white strip at the bottom and a white shawl on my shoulder, it would have been nice for all other students to have a "Balaji Movie show"in the campus.

Its ridiculous, but people hover when anything relates to the religion. its sad. Pity for all those who support these rules , tradition and culture in educational institution. I would appreciate those who didnt make it a fuss when shabarimala dress code and maala was banned in the same college. Now guys dont try with your bhindi, flower etc at our good christian institutions with in the city please.

Come on! Keep your religion inside your home. Its a college not a madrassa!. Almost all christian educational institutions ban hindus from wearing bindi or kumkum and other things related to religion. Hindus never made an issue out of it. Muslims want secular democracy when they are in minority and sharia when they are in majority.

In India secular lost its meaning and is equivalent to minority appeasement. True meaning of secularism is to keep religion out public life and not the other way around. How many muslims support uniform civil code?

Mr. Joseph D''Souza, you are quite correct in your stance in this matter. Soumya Shetty, you need to rethink on what you talk! Schools and colleges have been running since ages, all communities being a part of the students and faculty.

Can you recall all this fanaticism in those days? Why are we allowing extremists to spoil the existing peace in the society? Dont you realise that such people are the ones all out to poison the minds of others into thinking rubbish like them? When you are in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, regardless of your religion, dont the women have to wear the burkha when going out of their houses? How come you follow those rules so obediently? Why dont you revolt against this practice?

It''s a shame how you condemn other religions and think you are the best. Is it in the Hindu culture to try and create vengeance between communities? Is it Hindu culture to force ''saffron'' into everything?! Why has all the tolerance level gone down so much? Why are we allowing the so called ''organisations'' to interfere in the ''normal'' running of our lives?

Ask such organisations to use their negative energies for the good of the nation - fight against the corruption in the higher levels, the government. We ought to have tough guys like them to straighten up the bureaucrats. Dont waste time on such petty matters like ''scarf in school/colleges''.

Dont forget, we have Sikhs with turbans too! Hope they are not the next targets. Let us be more practical and tolerant towards such things. We wont lose anything.

It is better to introduce uniforms in colleges. So there wont be any problem. Religion should not be practiced in colleges. Ms. Soumya you are absolutely right.

Mr. Joseph, you made a right point but it is very unfortunate to know that Mr. Mayya (SVS collage correspondent) has given inappropriate statement to the media that Ms. Aysha has got out support from some groups, but the fact of the matter is SVS collage pressurized by Sangh Parivar to impose their ideology.

Mr. Mayya has said that institution has a history of 40 years, and there were no problem, that is true. Because, the college has not come into the influence of Sangh parivar. Muslim girls were studying in different educational institutes throughout Karanataka.

Recent day’s Veil & scarf has become new tool to attack on Muslims psychologically. Past decade there were huge debate on backwardness of Muslim Girls in education, when Muslims giving priority to Girls education by wearing modest dress, this become another issue. This seems a systematic programme fostered by Sangh parivar to pamper Muslim community.

Initially I thought it was the principal''s fault, but after hearing the principal''s explanation, I think he is right. It is better to introduce uniforms in the colleges like we had in our schools. Girls used to wear headscarf but once they reached school premises they used to removed it. When there is uniform, we can see the feeling of oneness.

Miss Soumya how u quoted that girl and her family created nusiance by the help of Extermists!!!.Scarf is related to Religious Beliefs of one Community. I hope you well knw that one Comunity puts Bindi,Kumkum on Forehead,Sacred Lockets on Neck. Is that dont apply to that Community.

India is not for Single Comunity,India is an Democratic Country and any one can follow their own Religious Beliefs,if its not possible as you say then its surely as Violation of Fundamental Rights.. Indian Constitution as Clearly mentioned about "Right to Freedom".In the college Matter Prinicipal told that some Students may ask for namaz, i ask him that doesnt he have Idols or Photos of Gods in his office.it can be applicable or what?? Just think as secular dont think for one Religion or community.

The Principal is 100.100% right. There are some norms in the institution, which is called as discipline. If students are not willing, they have all the rights to stay back or join any other college where there is no discipline.

I think this matter is blown out of proportion.and I agree that religion should be in your house and not brought to the your place of study. If you look very CLOSELY at the second photograph can you tell whether this girl is Ayesha or salma or rani or shaila.

So she  can be salma writing a exam on behalf of Ayesha. Let us shun this age old practice of wearing a burhka and try to be a little civilized. All muslims know why the burkha was worn many years ago, so that men could not look at other women any now I see some girls wear jeans pant and a scarf dont follow the tradition just for the heck of it

I think its wrong and hateful to put this girl through all this trash. College students...., you should be studying and having fun and not allow yourselves to be used/abused in the name of Politics & Religion by grown-up Instigators who have their own agendas.

I think its hateful as well as bigoted to tell this girl that she can''t wear her headscarf. Because, by your own definition our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could not be allowed as a student/teacher in SVS collage since he wears a Turban (Which is his religious beliefs). If you believe the Prime Minister too should not wear turban then you are clearly misguided, hateful and a bigot.

The explanation given by the Principal sounds quite logical and quite satisfactory, and I strongly endorse his views. As commented by Manohar of Mangalore, Religion should be confined to homes and the place of worship only. The Colleges and/or Educational Institutions have, and always had, certain set of rules, disciplines and regulations in place, with regard to uniforms, dress codes and like issues, which are to be strictly followed and adhered to, irrespective of the students caste, religion and the religious practises, and no exceptions can be made in this regard.

The parents and students always have the choice to go elsewhere, if they are not prepared to fall in line.

College is very much right in this issue. The girl & her family whith help of some extremist organisations are trying to spoil the reputation of that perticular educational institute. With much media hype this virus will spread all over and disturb cummunal harmony. This girl and her family has to take the responsiblity of this unwated issue.

Mr. Ganesh Prabhu says "We do not discriminate the students based on religious identity". When few thugs threaten the students and the pricipal takes action not on those who create threat but the one who is threatened.

What is this Mr. Prabhu? do you call it discrimination or bias? Mr. Mayya argues his case and tells that if tomorrow Jains want to come naked.... Mr. Mayya please note that not all Jains walk around naked on your streets but only their priests rennounce everything and as a sign of it, they go clothless. But every Muslim woman wears a Burkha or a headscarf all the time. Why did you Mr. Mayya wake up only some thugs created problem and not from the day this young lady entered your college?

Are you afraid or instructed by someone not to take action against those thugs who create problem in your esteemed College and not fulfill the purpose for which they have taken admission? Come clean guys....time to wake up.
