Kundapur: 11 From Bhatkal Perish in Road Accident at Byndoor

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Nov 20: In a major road accident between a private bus and Tata Sumo vehicle that occurred on national highway 17 at Nandanavana near Uppunda, Byndoor, at around 9.15 pm on Thursday November 19, 11 persons including seven women, died.

A group of neigbourers was returning to Bhatkal, their native place, after visiting Mangalore for health check up, when tragedy struck. All the 11 persons including the driver, who were travelling in the Sumo, lost their lives. Nine were killed on the spot, while two others died on way to the hospital. The deceased hailed from Madina Colony, Mushma Street and Azad Nagar in Bhatkal.

The ill-fated vehicle belonged to Abdul Ghani Arman from Bhatkal. Jaffer, driver of the vehicle, used to take people from Bhatkal for medical treatment and check up to Mangalore, often.

It is said that the Sumo driver tried to avoid colliding with a truck in front of the vehicle, the driver of which had applied brakes suddenly, after seeing a cow crossing the road. As the vehicle swerved to the right, it hit a private bus, going to Bangalore, coming from the opposite direction. Both the vehicles were moving at great speed, and pitch darkness at the spot hampered relief operations.

The deceased have been identified as Hafiz, Mouleem, Mohammed Altaf Siddque, Taousif, Babu alias Jamir Jaffer Shaikh (driver), Salma, Bibi Shahida, ayesha, Shabana, Sharika, Uzma and Gazia. Tata Sumo turned into a mess of mangled steel in the accident, and the concerned had to struggle a lot to retrieve the bodies of the victims. Traffic on the national highway was blocked for sometime due to the accident.

Its very shocking news to hear..... may their souls rest in peace. what are these n.h.a.i engineers and ministers doing? even after such a big accident these ministers will not understand the fate of daily commuters who travel from mangalore to kundapur.... first mistake, being in well educated district and keeping quiet of these road conditons. second mistake, giving vote to these ministers who improve their own wealth... jaago people jaago...

Really it is very sad to hear. God may bring peace and happyness to their soul. One more thing to convince the people is that, why the people take unnecessary risk by prefering tempo, car and even sometimes lorry for the journey? Its always better to prefer K.S.R.T.C or privite buses for the journey. Just see the picture passengers those who travelled in the bus were all safe but no one survived in the tempo! Anyhow atleast in the future people should think twice before go for the travel.

I am really sorry and am deeply saddened by this accident. May they rest in eternal peace. As I have written many times, there are few thumb rules while driving on our highways. 1.The driver should have had enough of rest. During a long drive, take a short break of 15 minuets once every 2 hours. If you have hired a vehicle, insist on a break. 2. Keep at least 25 - 50 feet distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you. 3. No one should enter into a conversation with the driver. 4. Allow anyone who is in a hurry to overtake you. Most of all, start early, drive at a reasonable speed and reach safely. I am a safety Officer and the above are only 4 out of a possible 15 safety rules. Please try to follow - this is a request.

It is very sad. It is hard to believe isn't it? I was so shocked when I heard this at night 9.20 pm.. I was also really sad about that all bhatkalis people in it. It had been in the history of Bhatkal that 11 persons died on spot when the Bangalore Bus collided with Tata Sumo Bhatkal.. its sad to hear such huge number of innocent Bhatkali losing lives! So sad, so sad, its a rememberance for all the bhatkalian by date ZILHAJ 1!! or 19 November 2009!!

I Always blame the government for failing to maintain the road network. Our roads are in bad conditions. This only shows that our bad roads are the main cause of deaths in the country. It is a fact that road accidents have become one of the major killers in the country apart from AIDS, Cancer and Malaria. Road safety experts claim that road accidents in the country claim four lives daily.

It is painful and shocking to loose people who could have helped in the development of the country in these road accidents. Many others have been crippled and incapacitated by these accidents some of which are preventable. Much as I applaud the efforts being made to deal with these accidents, i think there is need to also concentrate on those that are affected by these accidents. May their souls rest in peace. May Allah grant strength to their families who died in the accident. Allah un tammaam ki baal baal magfirath farmaye!! Allah un tamaam murhumeen ke ghar waloun ko saber jameel ada farmaye…

We have witnessed so many fatal accidents on NH 17, in the last couple of years, killing hundreds of people and affecting their families. We just talk about such incidents for couple of days and forget when some other news comes up. We are hearing about the dual road since our childhood days. God knows when it's going to happen. Till then it's better to drive responsibly & cautiously taking care of ourselves and others.

Another tragedy (may their soul rest in peace) on our roads and we all feel sad about them and forget in a few days. What will the government do about these roads where animals can easily stray? Drivers can drive at whatever speed they want without worrying of being caught for rash driving!! Speed camera may be an answer to save lives? Wake Up Govt authorities!!!

Every now and then we hear about tragic accidents on this Highway mainly between mangalore and Karwar as this passes thru main towns, governemnt should seriously think of widening of this Highway with a median, this will certainly bring down fatal accidents.

What happened last night near Byndoor was beyond anybody's imagination, in that five members belonged to one family, it is impossible to understand the grief of the berieved family. May Almight rest all the souls in peace and give strenght to the berieved families to bear this great loss.

May their souls rest in peace? May Allah grant strength to their families. All these road accidents mainly due to narrow roads without a divider on the middle. India is trying to be globalize but the road infrastructure still remain worst than that of underdeveloped countries.

War torn countries like Vietnam and Cambodia have better roads now because the government always shows interest on road infrastructure due to this they have attracted thousands of Tourist who travel safely through roads.

Just take an example of Mangalore-Udupi national highway and there are no dividers on the road at many places for long stretches. Take the example of Kukke Subramanian Temple, many film personalities and every minister visit there very often but they have a convoy of vehicles with police siren so they travel safe.

Not a single minister from south kanara has shown interest in widening the roads of the coastal belt. There are so many lawyers in South kanare who can file a PIL with Supreme Court against NH authorities but all of them are busy with either real estate documents or communal fights criminal cases.
