Karnataka Eyes Rs.200-billion Investments in Tourism Sector

Bangalore, March 8 (IANS) Karnataka Monday unveiled an ambitions master plan to attract Rs.200 billion (Rs.20,000 crore) investments in the tourism sector over the next five years to make the picturesque state a frontline destination for domestic and overseas tourists.

"We have drawn up a master plan based on the 2020 vision document for a comprehensive development of tourism across the state. The 10-year plan will be implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, with more investments from private capital," Tourism and Infrastructure Development Minister G. Janardhana Reddy said at an event here.

The master plan attempts to identify the economic contribution of the traveller economy directly and indirectly through the value chain. It also highlights the socio-economic policy objectives such as regeneration, social and economic inclusion, enhancing skills and employment.

"One of the objectives is to generate about 200,000 jobs direct and indirect over the next five years through various initiatives in the tourism industry. Unlike in the IT sector, where jobs are largely concentrated in the urban areas, jobs in the tourism sector are inclusive, dispersed throughout the state and are entrepreneurial," Reddy said.

The state government has allocated Rs.250 crore in the budget for ensuing fiscal (2010-11) towards development of tourism infrastructure in the state in collaboration with the private sector.

"The investments will be in integrated theme parks and theme cities that will be self contained, supporting planned communities with minimum carbon footprint for showcasing the state as Green Karnataka. We will also preserve and showcase the rich culture and heritage of the state," Reddy said after launching 'Southern Splendour', a week-long luxury tourist train service that links Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

According to Haselfre Solutions Ltd chairman and managing director N. Janardhan, who drafted the master plan in association with the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corp (KSTDC), safe and hassle free travel for tourists is a critical influencer on the attractiveness of a destination.

"Different disaster scenarios have been identified in the master plan and a crisis management plan has been crafted to begin with for the Golden Chariot, the luxury train journey that takes travellers through Karnataka and Goa," Janardhan noted.

The master plan also focuses on real time governance and coordinated action by institutions to meet the specific needs of the tourism sector to make Karnataka the 'numero uno' state in the country in tourism arrivals, capital inflows for infrastructure development and creation of tourist eco system.

"Tourism has the potential to be a key economic driver of the state. The five-fold path in the master plan will create thousands of jobs while attracting investments in the sector," Reddy added.

The state tourism department plans to set up a special purpose vehicle for speedy processes of investment proposals.

    Dear Mr.Nagesh,

First of all u must watch NEWS9 english TV channel, and ask your friend mr.Reddy to clean the garbage accumulated throughout the Bangalore and other cities in Karnataka.A minister who is incapable of cleaning our roads, what we can expect from him in connection with tourism. My dear Nagesh I hope u have passed through shiradi ghat by bus.If so please ask mr.reddy who ate crores of ruppees taken for repair work & and I believe not even a thousand rupee has been really spent for the real work, with a result the road condition is worst than before the work has been done.I hope this road is really a tourist attraction.

Dear Nagesh please, please tell your honorable minister, firstly to build a few decent toilets so that your sisters can use them during their travel.Do u really think the present toilets are tourist attractions.Mr.Nagesh please visit existing tourist spots in Karnataka & study your self how dirty they are.Look at your gardens in Bangalore,& U will note how dirty they are.Have U seen broken benches in garden & the uncleared Garbage accumulated for years.I think after illigal mining stopped in Bellary Mr.Reddy suddenly woke up for tourim projects so that he can eat all the amount sanctioned for these projects without really spending any thing for the related work.Daiji world, please forward all our comments to our honourable minister. If these ministers are serious 0f developing tourism why the hell they are going foreign countries to spend our money.

I dont remember which minister d that he would construct a cable car from Malpe beach to the island across just beacuse he did not want to get his trouser/dhoti wet when boarding the boat. I was hoping that this minister would first build a few toilets in Malpe beach and also on the island. Well let the ministers jabber as they have to be in the lamp-light once in a while. It would be boring otherwise. Whatever you say of these ministers they have managed to be a minister where-as we common people can only criticise  nothing more.

Could we have done better ? This is mass movement and no individuel can change the existing system. There is no way to  change this system as it has infected our blood just like the computer virus. We have to first find an anti-virus programme to
    eliminate the coruption.

I doubt very much if any more tourist will come to Karnataka when it has been publicly admitted that Karnataka had maximum communal riots in India an pub attack on ladies in Mangalore. Tourists won't feel safe and they will go elsewhere.

Naganna, Your dream to put Karnataka in No. 1 spot has already fulfilled long ago when the worship places were and still are vandalized, women/teen age girls are attacked in public, your so favorite leaders were arrested for connection with underworld dons etc. etc. Your hats are always 'off' to senseless and useless individual groups & their destructive ideologies. I appreciate your thick skin Nagesh. It is true, some people never change.

May be out of this 20,000 crore, assuming the reddy brother and his hoodlums steal about Rs. 5000 crore, karnataka public is still left with Rs. 15,000 crore. That is still a very good investment for karnataka. From where the money for all this will come that is the big question! Maybe we, the common people have to steal from Reddy brothers first, before he steals from us (taxpayers) later.

If touristic places are developed,it is good for politicians/MLAs to stay in Karnataka rather than going to Goa,Hyderabad ..... during the time of taking govt to ransom!

Compared to Kerala,Goa,our effort to redefine touristic spots are of very primitive and backward. What we need is infrastructure first and then development. If there is no road, proper accomondation how can peoples were attracted. We have more heritage & historical spots than other staes. If it fully utilised,we can expect more revenue, forign currency and eventually more employement.

Reddy, before starting any works in Mangalore, please repair all the roads, the incomplete flyovers, drainage and the list goes on !!

The contractors may need atleast a month to deliver the goods from Udupi to Mangalore or any part in South Canara if they transport goods through these roads. So another 20 years to finish the tourism project !!

It makes me sick when I travel on these roads.

Under the prevailing inadequate electrical power which is a vital requirement of today’s life which seems to be not going to be solved for the next 50 years, our ministers are only self motivated to loot public property. What image an alien gets who visits our state and has to sleep without a fan due to power cuts?

What 200 billion??? Govt is focusing more on money making policy! that too by 2020 unimaginable. Let us not go too far. What happened to our Mangalore new int'l airport terminal? After all so many years finally managed to ute the project and almost on completion stage. From Sep 09 we have been for functioning the airport. God save us from all these crook politicians.

One final day when they have interim audit justice may reveal.. the amount of money politicians must have invested in their personal projects instead of investing in government projects for the development of state.

Whether this ambitious plan ultimately materalises or not, it`s another matter. At least it is good to have a detailed plan and I wish to congratulate the KSDTC on this initiative and wish them every success in their ventures. One thing is sure though, the pictursque State of Karnataka has plenty of opportunities for development of tourism specially in the region of Mysore and Western Ghats and and it is worthwhile to make every effort to tap these scenic and natural resources.

People have every right to express their opinion on the twohundred billion rupees investment planned for Karnataka Tourism project. Our hirtherto record of road conditions, sanitation, power supply, health and environment and many other sectors need a complete overall policy. Inspite of all the past abnormalities, we must try and open new windows of opportunities for growth and progress in Karnataka.

Tourism is perhaps one of the best areas to concentrate so that people in all segments of authority and decision making will be able to open their minds and hearts and make best use of the touristic opportunities that will create new jobs, new outlook and new forward looking ideas for growth and prosperity. We wish the Karnataka Government best of success in their future thoughts on tourism. We have the best location, location and location added with education, knowledge and entrepreneurship to move forward in the right direction for an ideal tourist state in Mother India. Let us therefore remain positive, and let us render whatever support required so that positive results will come on our way towards the path of Tourism in Karnataka State.

Our airports and sea ports are expanding our hotels and restaurants are increasing our parks and recreation facilities are progressing. We have the best of smart people willing to help and make so many things happen. You have our prayers and best wishes for your success. Qudha Afeiz.
