Mangalore: Events and Protests Mark World Women’s Day in City

Mangalore, Mar 8: “The service of Anganwadi teachers and helpers is very important to society, but the problem of their low wages will be discussed with the chief minister of the state to increase the amount of money sanctioned through the pension plan of the government”, said N Yogish Bhat, chairman, State Industrial and Investment Development Corporation, on Monday March 8.
Presiding over the programme ‘World Women’s Day’, organized by the zilla panchayat, department of women and child development, and district women’s commission, he said that the funds and projects by governments should reach the grassroots and women should be helped by it as the economical empowerment of women creates an empowered society.
“There are plans to develop the district women’s hospital, Lady Goshen, with Rs 6 crore for the women of the six nearby districts”, added Bhat.
Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, president, zilla panchayat, inaugurated the programme. Rajashree Hegde, vice-president, zilla panchayat, released a book on preventing cancer in women, authored by Dr Rathidevi.
Kittur Rani Chennamma award winner Lokeshwari Vinayachandra and national award winning Anganwadi teacher Jayalaxmi B R were felicitated by the guests. Student achievers including child dancer Mayuri Ullal and others from various fields were honoured during the programme.
An exhibition of handicraft items prepared by women was also organized at the venue. Competitions like ‘Rangoli’ drawing and garland-making were also arranged. The programme concluded with a seminar and cultural programme.
Meanwhile, as part of world women’s day, a protest march was organized by Samaja Ashrama Samiti and District Koraga Samithi in the city. The women protesters demanded equal rights for everyone.
The march started from Light House Hill in the city to deputy commissioner’s office with traditional dance and music with the protesters attired traditionally.
