Udupi, May 18: The first phase of work on setting up of the coal-based Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) by Hyderabad-based Nagarjuna Power Corporation, has been completed amid opposition from coastal residents and is awaiting inaugural by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.

The UPCL project was carried out unhindered in the neighbourhood of Nandikoor and Yellur villages, near here, owing to the support of state administration and a few people’s representatives.

Despite various groups and a few political parties campaigning against setting up of UPCL in the eco-sensitive region, the agitation by the affected families saw no headway.  It’s tragic that the anti-project groups and political parties failed to rethink viable strategy against the setting up of the project.

The local peasants near UPCL complained of thick smoke polluting the neighbourhood when Nagarjuna attempted to commission the power plant on an experimental basis a few months ago.  However, the local peasants have not come forward collectively to take up their grievances with the concerned authorities.

Meanwhile, the local peasants on Tuesday May 18 alleged that the effluent of the power plant is being released into nearby areas and has already seeped into their farmlands.  With these developments, the inaugural of the UPCL power plant is in quandary.

It may be recalled that the local peasants staged a protest by displaying black flags when dignitaries such as former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, former chief minister J H Patel, as well as former union ministers George Fernandes and Oscar Fernandes, were passing through the locality on various occasions in the past.

It remains to be seen what awaits the chief minister when he arrives to inaugurate the power plant shortly !

One side we add noise, heat and pollution to the environment of the villagers by setting up such coal based power plants and other side we add more pollution and heat by cooling the living rooms of the rich and wealthy ministers in the city by using this power. There is acute shortage of power in the state capital and are eagerly waiting for Udupi project, according to principle secretary energy, K. Jairaj. I would like to alert the people of Udupi, that this project is about to generate 600MW of power. Make sure that the power suffices Udupi before cushioning for other districts. This government is building 15 new bungalows for the ministers costing 45 Crores, tax payer’s money.

Who knows how many air conditioners installed for their comfort? Any coal based project must suffice the requirement of that particular district first and then provide for other district, as the heat of the environment to be tolerated by the people of that district.

Coal based power plant was not favorable to the green belt environment of this region. The coal-ash residue will create havoc to the environment of this sensitive region. Now lots of investment is gone into this project and it is too late to respond. The best way is to minimize the dumping of coal-ash around this region and find a way to recycle them into bricks, use in cement etc.

As long as it is in the favor of our region, I don’t thing anybody will go against it. As you all know how tough it is nowadays without electricity. But, savior consequences will have to face only if they don’t fulfill the local and the regional requirement first. I hope you all agree in my comments.

Yes,this is one more instance for the politicians to cause protests and other roadblocks. India is usffering from accute lack of electricity. In China they open plants like these every week and they produce 100,000 MW more power every year which is about 60% of entire power produced in India sofar.

Forget the inaugural! Give it to the needy. Let the general public get rid of hot weather! Do not wait for Halappas, Eshwarappas, Yediyurappas and Mutaliks! If the facility is ready, provide it to the tax payers! Do not wait for the swindlers!
