Mangalore, Jul 12: Karavali Konkans, an association formed by like-minded theatre and Konkani activists 16 years ago to promote Konkani art and culture, is now again set to promote Konkani stage for a cause.
J B Dsouza, a well-known dramatist who has penned over 40 Konkani plays, is not very active today because of lack of support and encouragement. But Karvali Konkans have quickly realised the need to promote artistes who have contributed to Konkani language, through staging of a play. To encourage this veteran playwright and to honour and support him, Karavali Konkans have decided to present a play, 'Ragthachi Kannik', written by J B Dsouza himself.
The 'Muhurath' ceremony of the play was organised in Don Bosco Hall in the city at 7 pm on Monday July 11.
The meaningful programme, which was attended by Konkani artistes and well-wishers, was presided over by Richard Moras, convener of Konkani Kutam Bahrain.
Fr Cyprian D'Souza, president of Konkani Natak Sabha, blessed the event, and wished every success to the endeavour of Karavali Konkans. In his capacity as the president of Konkani Natak Sabha, he stressed the need for staging of more Konkani plays in the city. He offered his wholehearted support for this good cause.
Richard Moras, in his address, gave a brief about the achievements of J B Dsouza, and congratulated Karavali Konkans for the noble cause initiated by them for supporting a Konkani artiste, who is in need of support and encouragement.
Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld.com was the guest of honour. In his address, he said that the real encouragement that can be extended to artistes is through the presentation of their creativity before the people. He hailed Karavali Konkans, which is a strong association under the able leadership of Leslie Rego, as a group that has the capacity to undertake any assignment for the promotion of Konkani art and culture.
Earlier, Leslie Rego, president of the association and compere of the event, explained about the need for holding the event. "It is rather easy to get sponsors for such an event, but difficult to get people who can work for a cause like supporting of an artiste through presenting his / her work," he felt.
The two-hour long play, which is scheduled to be staged on August 15, 2011 at Don Bosco Hall, will be directed by Dolla Manglur. Members of Karavali Konkans will enact in this play.
Dolla, who is responsible for identifying the talent of J B Dsouza, who was keeping a low profile, gave a brief about the storyline of the play, and also introduced the artistes to the audience.
Well-known singer, composer and playwright, Claud Dsouza, who is the co-director of the play, was also present on the dais.
More details on the play and playwright J B Dsouza, Kulshekar, will be available in the coming days on daijiworld.com
